TikTok along with other major platforms are becoming increasingly sensitive to platform guidelines, meaning that the potential of your account getting taken down is at an all time high. So to combat this, let’s go over the best practices for sustainability as a content creator.

Following Guidelines Does Not Mean You Are Safe 🦺

I’ll give an example, a creator I am in contact with let me know that any time she posts an ad on TikTok for a digital product/service, the video gets flagged and her account gets restricted, even though she was following all guidelines.

After appealing the decision with TikTok, the strikes on her account got removed, but it’s still incredibly scary as a creator to be met with the possibility of an account ban.

Many creators aren’t as lucky, having their account permanently deleted because of multiple community guidelines violations.

Sustainability 💪

As a content creator sustainability is everything, the goal is to retain your audience for as long as possible, not to be a one-hit-wonder.

The main issue with social media platforms in my opinion is the lack of ownership.

For example if you have a YouTube channel, you don’t actually own that account, YouTube does. In essence, this means that YouTube along with most other major platforms can control what you are able to create and publish to your audience, which is bad news.

Here are a few platforms where you actually have audience ownership:

• Email newsletter

• Blog (on your own website)

• SMS list

• Discord (kind of)

Blogging is decent, SMS is boring (in my opinion), and Discord still technically owns your audience but is less strict than most other platforms, so the best option seems to be building an email list.

Platforms like Beacons have a built in email list builder, but I would recommend Beehiiv when building an email audience because it gives you more tools than a simple email list builder is able to offer.

Benefits 🏆

Audience ownership compared to praying that a social platform doesn’t take you down has its benefits:

• Predictable views/engagement

• Creates a saleable asset

• Deeper connection with your audience

• Enhanced sustainability

• Increased sales/revenue
